Chip Sealing (applying seal coating, BST, Bituminous Surface Treatment) is the application of a special protective wearing surface to an already existing paved area. A dump truck full of gravel, or “chips”, attaches to a chip spreader, pulling it over the area to be sealed. A thin layer of liquid asphalt is sprayed down in front of the chip spreader.
